Germany | Airport strikes across Germany

Staff responsible for checking passengers and cargo have started an 18-hour warning strike at Germany’s biggest airports. An estimated 220,000 passengers are affected.

German airport association ADV warned that the strike action would “paralyze” the German flight network all day Tuesday. Frankfurt Airport operator Fraport canceled half of its 1,200 flights.

Syria refugees flee as camps buried in Lebanon snow storm

Evacuations are underway in the Syrian refugee camps across Lebanon after they were hit by snow storms and floods as part of Hurricane Norma.

UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) spokeswoman Lisa Abou Khaled said this week that the storm had completely flooded or collapsed 15 informal settlements out of at least 66 that were “heavily impacted”.

India | Indian workers hold biggest strike in history

150 million Indian workers took strike action in what is reported to be the biggest work stoppage in history.

Ten trade union centres and several independent federations joined together for an historic general strike on 8 and 9 January 2019. Workers in manufacturing, mining, energy, transportation, banking, public services, construction  and many other sectors took part, including many IndustriALL Global Union affiliates. For the first time, agricultural workers and farmers also called for a solidarity shutdown of rural India.

Venezuela | Nicolás Maduro sworn in as President of Venezuela

On January 10, Nicolás Maduro was sworn in as President of Venezuela with the presence of delegations from over 94 countries.

Former bus driver and student activist Nicolás Maduro began his second term as the president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela on January 10 after winning presidential elections in May 2018 with 67.84% of the votes cast. Maduro, during his swearing-in stated, “I swear on behalf of the people of Venezuela, on our ancestors and the great Chief Guicaipuro, on our afro-descendent people, on the Liberator Simón Bolívar, on the legacy of the Commander Hugo Chávez, on the children of Venezuela and the future”. His term in office will end in 2025.
