Serbian Artists Arrested Following Anti-Authoritarianism Art Museum Protest

Police in Serbia have sparked outrage by arresting artists Vladan Jeremić and Uroš Jovanović for ‘insulting’ the country’s President Aleksandar Vučić during the ceremonial re-opening of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) staged on October 20 a reopening ceremony that marked half a century since the museum received its first visitors during communist times. The MCA has been closed for the last 10 years. As Serbian authorities hosted the lavish political event, a group of artists staged a performance protesting autocratic influences on the arts and popular culture.

France | Clashes erupt as French unions take to the streets against labour reform

Clashes erupted on Thursday as thousands of demonstrators protesting against a controversial labour law took to the streets of Paris and cities across France. The interior ministry said 32 people had been arrested in connection with the violence.

France’s main CGT union estimated that 40,000 people had turned out to protest in Paris by mid-afternoon. Police, however, put the figure much lower, saying between 12,500 and 13,500 turned out for the demonstration.

More than 4,000 police officers have been deployed in central Mexico City as thousands of protesters have started to gather at the emblematic Independence Angel monument, to show support for striking teachers and to protest the government’s violent response which led to the deaths of 12 people.

Thousands of people opposed to France’s hotly contested labour reforms were back in the streets of Paris Thursday in the first violence-free protest in weeks.

Some 2,000 riot police were deployed to prevent a repeat of bloody scenes from the last such demonstration on June 14, just four days after the start of the Euro 2016 football tournament being played in France.
