Ukraine | Ukrainian journalists foiled operation of special services

On September 18, the Ukrainian opposition website “Strana” made a loud statement. The editorial office reported that Ukrainian special services tried to recruit Vyacheslav Seleznyov, a photojournalist of “Strana”. Ukrainian officials condemned Ukrainian journalists in Warsaw

On September 11, an OSCE-led Human Dimension Implementation Meeting, devoted to human rights and democracy, was held in Warsaw. This event is held by the OSCE every year.

There was a conflict between the Ukrainian government delegation and opposition journalists at the meeting. Independent journalists held a roundtable where they announced harassment and pressure on journalists by the Ukrainian authorities. There were the speakers as Ruslan Kotsaba, who spent 524 days in jail for calls against conscription, Dmitry Vasilets, convicted for 9 years allegedly for separatism, head of the media holding “Vesti” Olga Semchenko, as well as Olga Shariy, the wife of Anatoly Shariy, who became the first Ukrainian journalist received the status of political refugee in Europe.

Turkey | Imprisoned Turkish artist Zehra Doğan smuggled a thank-you letter to Banksy from jail

The artist and journalist Zehra Doğan has sent Banksy a thank-you letter that had to be illegally smuggled out of Turkey’s infamous Diyarbakır prison, where she is serving a 34-month sentence, in order to reach the secretive British street artist. Doğan wrote the letter out of gratitude to Banksy for a mural he created in collaboration with graffiti artist Borf in March in New York City, calling attention to her situation and advocating for her release. The handwritten letter, which was posted to Banksy’s Instagram account along with an abridged translation, opens with a description of the conditions at Diyarbakır, where she and many other members of Turkey’s Kurdish minority have been held and tortured.

On July 5, the Shevchenko district court of the city of Zaporozhye extended the arrest of journalist Pavel Volkov. He was arrested by the Ukrainian Security Service in September 2017. In the investigative isolator, Volkov suffers from asthma. “My son has serious health problems … He needs constant medication. I can not treat him from a distance,” – the mother of the arrested journalist tells.
