Turkey is opening a military training camp in Somalia in September

The camp has been under construction for the past two years, Somali Defence Minister Abdirashid Abdullahi Mohamed confirmed in a statement yesterday. The camp will be used for security and military forces in the Turkish Army.

Some 200 Turkish soldiers will be stationed at the base in Somalia, involved in training exercises. It is unclear whether the troops will be involved in any other conflict related mission.

Up to 1,500 troops can be stationed at the camp at one time in what will become Turkey’s larges overseas base.

Turkey has taken a keen interest in Somalia and opened an embassy in the capital Mogadishu in 2016. The Turkish government became one of Somalia’s main bilateral partners now and has been at the heart of some of the landmark development projects in Mogadishu, the capital.

Turkey recently established a military base in Qatar. Furthermore, a Turkish naval force is based in Qatar. Turkish government has proclaimed these successes as the manifesto of a more general ambition to become the go-to ally of Qatar in the Eurasian region.
