Kiev-controlled forces increase activity at contact line in Donbas

On August 20 the Ukrainian forces launched 267 mortar rounds and shells on the territory of the Donetsk republic over the past 24 hours. “In the Donetsk direction, the enemy used artillery, tanks and mortars. Two projectiles with the caliber of 152-mm, 22 tank shells, nine projectiles of 122-mm caliber, 70 rounds of the caliber of 120-mm and 102 of the 82-mm caliber were fired at the settlements and adjacent areas,” the Vice-Commander of the Operational Command of the Republic Eduard Basurin said.

According to Basurin, in the Mariupol and Gorlovka directions, fire was opened at seven settlements, 15 tank shells, as well as 13 rounds with a 120-mm caliber and 34 of 82-mm caliber were fired at the localities.

On August 21 the conflict escalated. Ukrainian security forces attempted to break through the defense line of the Donetsk forces near Zhabychevo village in the north of Donetsk tonight, the attack was repulsed, Ukrainian units retreated. “On the eve of Ukraine’s Independence Day, the units of 57 separate motorized infantry brigade under the command of Krasilnikov tried to show their skills… and attempted to seize our positions in the Zhabychevo area,” the Donetsk Operational Command noted.

At the same time, the Armed forces of Ukraine staged massive strikes on residential areas of the Petrovsky, Kuibyshevsky and Kievsky districts of the city of Donetsk, as well as on the outskirts of Yasinovataya. The fire was conducted from artillery of 122-mm caliber, mortars, IFV and armored personnel carriers, grenade launchers, heavy machine guns and small arms.

Seven house-buildings in four front-line districts of Donetsk were damaged as a result of night shelling on the part of Ukrainian military.

A civilian resident of Yasinovataya was wounded the previous evening by the shelling of the city by Ukrainian security forces. It was a woman born in 1948.

On August 20 Kiev-controlled forces shelled the employees of the DPR fire engineering service with automatic grenade launchers in the Petrovsky district of Donetsk, while the employees were putting the fire out on Zelyony Gai Street, 115. “The watch commander of the 3rd fire and salvage unit perished, two fire-fighters were wounded,” says the official statement. The shelling was conducted from the positions of the ‘Donbass’ volunteer nationalistic battalion.

As a result of August 21 shelling Kiev-controlled forces launched over 280 shells and mortar rounds. 19 DPR localities underwent the Ukrainian shelling. Two people perished, three more were wounded.

“In the Donetsk direction the enemy launched 74 shells of 152 mm and 122 mm caliber, 120 mortar rounds of 120 mm caliber and 51 mortar rounds of 82 mm caliber. In the Mariupol direction Ukrainian gunmen applied mortars of various calibers, having launched 38 mortar rounds, apart from it, grenade launchers and small arms were also applied,” enumerated the Vice-Commander Basurin. As a result of the Ukrainian attempt to break through the defense line in the Donetsk airport area one DPR soldier perished while defending the Republic’s frontiers.

In the same time Kiev-controlled forces increased activity near the contact line with Lugansk republic. The situation in the responsibility zone of the LPR People’s Militia has aggravated, LPR People’s Militia, Official Representative, Lieutenant-colonel Andrei Marochko stated this on August 21.

“Over the past 24 hours, the enemy committed 11 ceasefire violations. Positions of our units in the vicinity of the localities of Berezovskoye, Krasny Yar, Kalinovo, Pervomaisk, Kalinovo-Borshchevatoye and Zhelobok underwent shelling on the part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). Altogether, 358 projectiles, mortar-shells and grenades were launched on the territory of the LPR. As a result of the shelling, one serviceman perished, two more were wounded. Not achieving the backfire, the enemy shelled the localities of Krasny Yar and Kalinovo-Borshchevatoye. According to the LPR Emergencies Ministry, eight house-buildings were damaged, two civilians were wounded,” said Andrei Marochko.
