Father of Ukrainian antifascist killed on May 2 arrested

February 23: Alexander Kushnaryov, father of Kulikovo Field activist Gennady Kushnaryov, who died at the Odessa House of Trade Unions on May 2, 2014, was arrested and his home searched.

Law enforcement sources reported this to Timer.

According to them, Alexander is suspected of creating an “anti-Ukrainian organization,” and the related investigation has lasted for more than a year.

On February 23, Prosecutor of the Odessa Region Zhuchenko accused Alexander Kushnaryov of planning an operation to kidnap Verkhovna Rada Deputy Alexei Goncharenko, who would then supposedly have been tortured. [Goncharenko was one of the perpetrators of the May 2 massacre. He is a member of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko’s “Poroshenko Bloc,” and has already appeared on television to brag about his alleged role in the police operation targeting Kushnaryov.]

Timer confirmed the arrest of Alexander Kushnaryov in a phone call with his daughter.

of Gennady Kushnaryov on May 2, 2014.

Translator’s note: A further report shows photos of alleged “anti-Ukrainian literature” found in the search of Kushnaryov’s home. Police claim this material «promotes national hatred between Ukrainians, Russians and Jews.” In fact, as Timer notes, the photos show only copies of a memorial book for victims of the May 2 massacre and a pamphlet about the history of Ukrainian nationalism.
