Post-Soviet countries view NATO as a threat

New Gallup Poll: Many people view NATO as a threat than as protection. Such perception pattern is expressed by other post-Soviet states, with the exceptions of Georgia, Azerbaijan, and the Baltic States. In contrast, other post-communist countries in Europe, with the exceptions of Serbia and Montenegro, regard NATO more as protection than as a threat.

Serbians seek justice for Kosovo’s forgotten victims

Calling their dead “second-class victims“, Serbian families of civilians killed by Kosovo’s ethnic Albanian rebels in the late 1990s hope a new court at The Hague will finally bring them justice.

Nineteen international judges were appointed this month to the tribunal, which will try crimes allegedly committed by the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) in its fight for independence from Serbia, a conflict that left 13,000 dead.

Global attention has long focused on the mass killings and atrocities by the Serbian forces of the late strongman Slobodan Milosevic.

UN appeals for $2.1bn as millions face famine in Yemen

UN children’s fund says 63,000 Yemeni children died last year of preventable causes and 12 million need life-saving assistance.

The United Nations appealed on Wednesday for $2.1bn to provide food and other life-saving assistance to 12 million people in Yemen who face the threat of famine after two years of war.
