Middle East war: Mosul, Deir Ezzor, Palmyra

The war against Islamic state continues in Middle East. While Iraqi forces win, Syrian forces have serious problems.

Iraqi security forces (ISF) have cleared from ISIS militants the Mosul Park and the areas of Al-Muhandisin, Nurqal, Taqafah and the Ancient Nineveh, de-facto setting up control over the whole eastern part of Mosul. ISF units also gained control over 5 Mosul bridges from the eastern side of the city.

North of Mosul, the Popular Mobilization Units (Hashd Al-Sha’abi) continued their rapid advance towards the strategic town of Tal ‘Afar, killing and wounding scores of Islamic State terrorists on Tuesday.

The same time ISIS continues heavy attack on Deir Ezzor. The Syrian Arab Army lost a total of 76 soldiers during the 4 day long Deir Ezzor battle, with the majority of the casualties accumulating on Sunday and Monday. But the worse is enclave was cut on two parts.  The enclave has been supplied by air for months, but new configuration makes it extremely difficult. Meanwhile ISIS continues offensive despite of heavy loses. It plans to crash Syrian defense.

West to Palmyra situation changes for better to Syrian government. Some days before Syria Arab Army liberated significant territory. The Islamic State launched a counter-offensive in the western countryside of Palmyra on Tuesday, targeting the areas the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) recently liberated near the Jihar Crossroad. This resulted in a fierce battle that would last for three hours on Tuesday.

Despite the intensity of the Islamic State attack, the terrorist group was unable to recover any ground near the Jihar Crossroad; instead, they lost two armored vehicles and more than 20 combatants. As a result of this failed Islamic State attack, the Syrian Arab Army launched a counter-assault to advance their front-lines. The same day Russian general Sergey Rudskoy announced big offensive to Palmyra.
