It has been almost six years since war broke out in Syria, affecting the lives of millions of Syrians. Since the start of the war, Western media has been covering the war widely. With the battle in Kobané, this media also started reporting on Kurdish fighters and specifically the Kurdish women fighters at the forefront in the fight against radical jihadist group, Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL/Daesh). This fight captured the attention of citizens living in the West.

On January 14, 2016, the online Ukrainian publication Strana.ua published on its website an article entitled ‘The authorities are preparing a strategic blow to freedom of expression,’ warning that the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) intended to search the editorial offices of the newspaper. The SBU is also fabricating a criminal case against the founder of the newspaper, Igor Guzhva.

Gambians seek refuge in Senegal amid political tension

DAKAR, Senegal – Several thousand people, mainly children, have crossed into Senegal from the Gambia in the last 10 days to escape growing tension over the results of last month’s presidential election.

While some people have decided to stay in the Gambia, many have begun sending their children to Senegal as a precautionary measure amid the political impasse, fearing potential unrest.
