NATO’s Stoltenberg Condemns Russian Violation of Turkey Airspace

NATO condemned Russia’s violation of Turkey’s airspace and urged the Kremlin to coordinate its campaign against Islamic State.

“Russia’s actions are not contributing to the security and stability of the region,” North Atlantic Treaty Organization Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said in Brussels on Monday. “I call on Russia to fully respect NATO airspace and to avoid escalating tensions with the alliance.”

Stoltenberg issued the statement after meeting Feridun Sinirlioglu, Turkey’s interim foreign minister. Turkey said earlier that a Russian warplane strayed into Turkish airspace on Saturday.

“I urge Russia to take the necessary steps to align its efforts with those of the international community in the fight against ISIL,” Stoltenberg said. Brussels-based representatives of the 28 NATO allies will meet later Monday, he said.
