Austria | Life in prison for a Palestinian in Austria

A proportional sentence? Freedom of expression under threat
by Wilhelm Langthaler
In the spring of 2018, a young Palestinian from Gaza was charged for terrorism and sentenced to life imprisonment by a jury at a local court in Krems, Austria. The sparse media reports indicate that the alleged terror attack, which did not actually happen, was intended to be carried out in occupied Jerusalem. The witnesses, juvenile Palestinians, were not actually present at the court in Austria, but gave their statements via Skype from an Israeli gaol.

Israel | A new shameful crime: apartheid voted as the Basic Constitutional Law of Israel

by Savas Michael Matsas

Today, July 19, 2018, early morning, the Israeli Knesset, the Parliament of the Zionist State controlled by the ruling far right coalition under Benjamin Netanyahu, passed by 62 votes against 55 and one abstention its apartheid “Nation-State of the Jewish People” Basic Law, abolishing even the “democratic” façade of the 1948 “Declaration of Independence of Israel”. Not only Arabic ceases to be an “official language” but a destructive blow is given to all the extremely restricted rights of the Palestinian Arab citizens of the occupied country. Segregation according to ethnicity and religion is established and “Jewish settlements” are praised and inaugurated as the State’s highest “national value”. But also the rights of the Israeli Jewish citizens, who do not conform to the so called “ultra-orthodox” distorted version of Judaism ordered by the corrupt rabbis supporting Netanyahu, are under immediate attack.

ONE STATE IN PALESTINE/ISRAEL CANNOT BRING EQUALITY IF IT IS A CAPITALIST STATE

by Ellen Isaacs

As we reflect on the latest brutality against protestors in Gaza and the struggle to end the outrageous Israeli occupation of Palestine and oppression of Israeli Palestinians, it is important to formulate a goal for what we would hope to attain. This goal does not have to be achievable in the near future or even near distant future, but it provides a framework that defines what immediate struggles are engaged in and whom is declared to be an ally or an enemy. In fact, it is unlikey that this conflict will be settled between Israelis and Palestinians in isolation, as the whole region will probably be engaged in larger conflict between Iran, Saudi Arabia, Israel, the US and Russia long before that happens. However, it is to be hoped that there would be, at some time, an entity that could be Palestine/Israel, or perhaps some larger regional entity, that would provide for equality, opportunity and freedom for all who live there. Then I know that organizing in the present must strive to be multiracial, multinational, and to be led by rank and file people, as opposed to economic moguls, politicians or religious leaders.
