Declaration of the Organising Committee of the Internationalist Socialists of Algeria (COSI)

Ever since the beginning of the democratic and revolutionary mobilisation that emerged in Algeria on 22 February, the Organising Committee of the Internationalist Socialists of Algeria (COSI) has affirmed consistently that the answer to the aspiration of the entire Algerian nation to take its destiny into its own hands is to be found in the election of a Sovereign Constituent Assembly, the only means capable of establishing the form and content of what national sovereignty and democracy should be and the only means to etch in stone all democratic and workers’ rights.

The mass rejection of the current regime continues to deepen. This rejection cannot be responded to by repressive measures against political parties or their leaders. It is up to the people, and only to them, through their elected and mandated delegates to the Sovereign Constituent Assembly, to decide among the various political options before them. This requires full democratic freedoms — not repressive measures.

In recent weeks, we have witnessed operations of harassment and intimidation against activists in the democratic rights’ movement and against others in the labour movement.

The Organising Committee of the Internationalist Socialists of Algeria (COSI) asserts that the measures taken against these militants, in particular against the General Secretary of the Workers Party (PT), must cease immediately. The path to democracy cannot be taken by restricting freedoms.

No to repression!

Yes to democratic freedoms!

Yes to the Sovereign Constituent Assembly! System Clear Out!
