Ex-CIA agent: — We got millions to destroy Yugoslavia

Former CIA agent, Robert Baer, said in an interview with the Bosnian-speaking newspaper WebTribune, during a promotion tour for his upcoming book “Secrets of the White House”, in Quebec, Canada, that he and his group of agents in the nineties received millions of dollars to spread hatred and contributing to disunity in Yugoslavia. Baer was a leading agent for the CIA in 1991-94, and about his job then he says among other things:

— I received instructions that Slovenia was ready to declare independence. We were given money, a few million dollars, to fund various NGOs, opposition parties and various politicians who inflamed hatred.

Baer was not just anybody in the CIA. He worked for the American intelligence agency for 21 years in locations as diverse as Madras and New Delhi, Beirut, Khartoum, Paris, Dushanbe, Morocco, Yugoslavia and Iraqi Kurdistan.

He has published a series of books, and two of them have been New York Times bestsellers: Sleeping with the Devil, about the royal family in Saudi Arabia and its relationship to the United States, and See No Evil, which is about Baers years as a CIA agent. See No Evil was filmed as Syriana, which gave George Clooney an Oscar for the role of Baer. Baer writes regularly for Time.com, in Vanity Fair, the Wall Street Journal and Washington Post.

In 2004, Baer told a reporter of the British political weekly New Statesman, regarding the way the CIA deals with terrorism suspects, «If you want a serious interrogation, you send a prisoner to Jordan. If you want them to be tortured, you send them to Syria. If you want someone to disappear — never to see them again — you send them to Egypt.»

When he resigned from his position in the CIA, he was awarded the CIA’s Career Intelligence Medal, which is awarded on basis of «Cumulative record of service which reflect exceptional achievements That substantially Contributed to the mission of the Agency.»

He further says in the interview:

Where and when was your first job in Yugoslavia?

I arrived by helicopter with three agents. We landed on 12 January 1991 in Sarajevo. Our job was to keep an eye on alleged terrorists of Serbian nationality, who were expected to attack Sarajevo.

Who were the terrorists in question and why were they supposed to carry out these attacks?

They gave us files about a group called “Supreme Serbia” detailing plans to conduct a series of bomb attacks on key buildings in Sarajevo in opposition to Bosnia’s ambition to leave the former Yugoslavia.

Did that group ever exist and what exactly were you doing in Sarajevo under CIA command?

No such group ever existed! Our headquarters lied to us. Our mission was to alarm and spread panic among politicians in Bosnia, simply to fill their heads with the idea that the Serbs would attack. In the beginning we accepted the story, but after a while we started to wonder. Why were we raising such hysteria when the group clearly did not exist?

Bauer thus provides a strong impression that the United States, including through the CIA and various NGOs and others, did their utmost to put ethnic groups in the former Yugoslavia against each other and get them to hate each other.

This of course succeeded, as we know, extremely good.

When asked if they just made propaganda against the Serbs, Baer answers:

Yes and no. The aim of the propaganda was to divide the republics so they would break away from the motherland Yugoslavia. We had to choose a scapegoat who would be blamed for everything. Someone who would be responsible for the war and the violence. Serbia was chosen because in some ways it is a successor to Yugoslavia.

How and when did you finish the operation and did it have a name?

For me, it ended after two weeks, I got a new job in Slovenia. Otherwise the operation lasted for a months and had the name «truth». Although it was anything but that!

Can you name the politicians of the former Yugoslavia who were paid by the CIA?

Yes, but it is delicate. Stipe Mesic, Franjo Tudjman, Alija Izetbegovic, many counselors and members of the government in Yugoslavia have been paid, and Serbian generals, journalists, etc. For a time Radovan Karadzic was paid, but he stopped taking money when he realized he could be sacrificed and charged with crimes committed in Bosnia — which was orchestrated by the American administration.

You mentioned the control and funding of the media, so it was true?

It is already known, some CIA agents were responsible for writing the official statements which the TV anchors read on the news. Of course the announcers knew nothing, they got it from their boss and he of his, who was our man. There was a task for everything, and through television we incited hatred, nationalism and pointed out the differences between the people.

The interviewer asks Baer what he can say about Srebrenica, which the has been standing as symbol of Serb evil. Baer replies:

Srebrenica is an exaggerated story and unfortunately many people are being manipulated. The number of victims is the same as the number of Serbs and others killed but Srebrenica is political marketing. My boss, who was formerly a US Senator, stressed repeatedly that some kind of scam would go down in Bosnia. A month before the alleged genocide in Srebrenica, he told me that the town would be headline news around the world and ordered us to call the media. When I asked why, he said you’ll see. The new Bosnian army got the order to attack homes and civilians. These were of course the citizens of Srebrenica. At the same moment, the Serbs attacked from the other side. Probably someone had paid to incite them!

Then who is guilty of the genocide in Srebrenica?

Srebrenica should be blamed on the Bosnians, the Serbs and the Americans – that is us! But in fact everything has been blamed on the Serbs. Unfortunately, many of the victims buried as Muslims were Serbs and other nationalities. A few years ago a friend of mine, a former CIA agent and now at the IMF, said that Srebrenica is the product of an agreement between the US government and the politicians in Bosnia. The town of Srebrenica was sacrificed to give America a motive to attack the Serbs for their alleged crimes, says Baer.

That was Bill Clinton’s «red line».
